“The killer got into the house again today.” So begins Beverly Olevin’s latest work. Set in small town America in the 1950s, A Friend of the Family is a beautifully written saga of secrets, loyalties, and most of all, love. “That’s how I remember it and there is no one left alive who can remember it with me,” she writes, as she draws back the curtain of time to reveal events that happened sixty years ago.The mystery kept me reading and the characters touched my heart. I was especially moved by the author’s portrayal of her father, a kind and gentle man whose love for his family and his fellow man drives all the events in the story.
I am so glad I got to know Morrie Bernstein through the pages of this book and think you will be, too. Highly recommend.

A Friend of the Family Beverly Olevin 9780692757802 Books Reviews
I was drawn into this story immediately by this young girl's strength of character and intellect, and I wanted to know more about the man who began affecting her and her family's life. I loved the storytelling, suspense and getting to know these real life characters. I got to see the tenderness, love, integrity and vulnerability in each family member and in their relationships with one another. I also learned something about what generosity and kindness can do in adverse circumstances. I was inspired and drawn-in from start to finish!
This is a marvelously, many textured memoir by a gifted writer. A nostalgic trip fill with mystery and intrigue, Ms. Olevin deftly weaves the story of the 'family friend' throughout, down to the book's last line. Seen through the eyes of a young girl with an inventive and precocious spirit, a coming of age story with a lot of love and adventure. What a great read!
A young girl is curious – and worried – about the letters her father receives from a prisoner. Set in the late 50s in small town Illinois, the story of the unusual relationship between the two men is part touching memoir, part mystery – although this ittle book is less about the "friend of the family" than about the family itself, about not so well-kept secrets, and the love between father and daughter. I found Beverly Olevin's novella very charming – the prisoner's story kept me wondering, but the daughter's love letter to her father touched my heart.
A heroine's journey....sweet, intimate, rebellious , loving memoir of a young girl navigating her way thru life and family. The author's honest, straight forward recounting of her childhood years like a Joan of Arc in the small town of Elgin, Illinois. I laughed, felt touched and could deeply relate to that point in our lives where, as the author states, "That's how I remember it, and there is no one left alive who can remember it with me." Now she has a village to remember with her.
I am so proud of my cousin Beverly for writing such a warm touching account of her family. I felt I was five years old again playing with my cousins Marsha and Beverly and being smothered with an unbelievable amount of love and never wanting to leave. I knew Morrie as my uncle but have seen him more as a father figure who in his own quiet way helped me see the goodness in people. The good times in my visits to his garden and the cherished moments I had in talking with Morrie I believe, helped shape who I am today. Going to your home and sharing time with your family was ALWAYS my favorite trip of the year!!! Thank you Bev for writing this short novel as I look forward to more good reads in the future!
What a gem of a book! I was expecting a nice read. What a got was a story that will stick with me for years and years to come. Ms. Olevin weaves a beautiful tale of her childhood, her family and her father's decision to willing invite a convicted felon into their lives. It is young Beverly's precociousness and energy that hook the reader from the start but her incredible chronicle that picks one up and sweeps one through the narrative. I can only imagine how difficult this story was for her to tell. It requiring her to face a dark and scary past and relive a childhood trauma that could have ended quite differently had the stars not aligned on that one fateful day.
I love memoir, and I'm a huge Beverly Olevin fan, so A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY was an instant must-read on my list! From her opening sentence through the entire adventure, I was hooked. I loved every word and consumed it in one sitting. Beverly's ability to paint scenes with words is a true gift. Against the backdrop of a small Midwestern town, the intrigue of this mysterious communication unfolds while she illustrates the relationships within her family that are so honest, relatable and timeless. As a girl who grew up close to her father, I especially loved the bond between Beverly and her father. I only wish I'd had the chance to meet Morrie~he was truly a kindhearted, patient, honorable man who did a fantastic job empowering and raising his two daughters. This is a powerful novella that will stay with me for a long time.
